Guatavita

This day trip is available from Bogotá

About

Laguna Guatavita is a former sacred site of the Muisca Indians, the former inhabitants of the central highlands of what is today known as Colombia. At Laguna Guatavita, the Muisca Cacique would cover himself i gold dust, sail out into the laguna and rinse off, fine goldwork would be thrown into the laguna as an offering for Chie, the goddess of water.

Word got back to Spain and thus was born the Legend of El Dorado. El Dorado, its literal meaning in Spanish is “the golden one” and is a reference to the gold covered cacique.

There have been numerous efforts to drain the laguna to find the gold treasures submerged below. Most of the gold made its way back to Spain however some examples are on display currently in the Bogotá Gold Museum.

Today Laguna Guatavita is a protected park and has excellent trails for hikers

The name Guatavita also refers to the nearby town of Guatavita which is unusually not very old. The town was built in the 1960’s as an architectural heritage site and replica of of the original old town of Guatavita which was sacrificed to create a reservoir.

Guatavita town is fashioned in exacting detail and pays homage to the legend of El Dorado of its namesake laguna.

Tour outline

The tour includes private transport from your hotel and gives you a chance to see both the laguna and the town, as well as to follow one of the hiking trails. Besides taking in the breathtaking scenery of the Laguna Guatavita Park, you will also have the chance to explore Guatavita town.

We say…

  • A trip to Guatavita is a must for those interested in Muisca heritage and the legend of El Dorado, especially if you have already had your imagination captured by the Bogotá Gold Museum.
  • Due to the outstanding natural beauty of the area and the photo opportunities presented by Guatavita town, this tour is available as one of our Bogotá Photography Tours.
  • For a great value day out, consider combining a half day visit to Guatavita with a half day visit to The Salt Mines of Nemocón or The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá.
  • Consider stopping off in Chía on the way back to Bogotá
  • This walk in the park is by no means a walk in the park. Although the paved footpaths are well defined, be aware that you will require a moderate level of fitness to complete the walk.

The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá

This is a day trip available from Bogotá

About

The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is arguably one of Colombia’s most famous attractions with over 13 million visitors since its inauguration in 1995. The current salt cathedral is a replacement of the original salt cathedral which was closed as the mines became unstable.

Just 48km outside of Bogotá, the salt cathedral is buried 180m underground in the Zipa hill, a hill named after the Muisca Zipa Cacique that once ruled over the Bogotá savannah.

To construct the cathedral, some 250 thousand tonnes of salt were excavated. The Zipa hill is the world’s largest single deposit of rock salt and salt has always been central to the economy of Zipaquirá and to a lesser extent the Bogotá savannah.

Reverred by many, the Salt Cathedral seldom fails to enchant the visitor that delight in its guided tour through its exquisitely lit chambers, the cathedral itself, the brine museum, the rock climbing wall and the coffee chamber.

Tour outline

We arrange private transport from Bogotá to the Salt Cathedral, the tour of the salt cathedral is included in the entrance fee, which is in turn, included in our day trip

We say…

  • The Salt Cathedral understandably draws thousands of visitors and is one of Colombia’s top attractions
  • Be sure to stop by Zipaquirá town on your trip. Although the town is not officially noted as such, it has Colombia’s most decadent fruit salads in its fruterías
  • Like a beer? Zipaquirá has an increasingly interesting bar scene just off the main plaza, try going to the Salt Cathedral early afternoon and then having a few drinks in Ziapquirá afterwards.
  • For a great value day out, consider combining half a day at the Salt Cathedral with half a day at Guatavita

The DC3 Experience

This day trip is available from Bogotá

About

What is there to say? The Douglas DC-3 is the iconic aircraft that revolutionised air travel in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Over 16,000 of these aircraft were produced, more than 10,000 of which were the Douglas C-47 Skytrain version used extensively by the US Air Force and Navy.

Today it is estimated that only about 100 DC-3s remain in service, most of which are conversions of the C-47 Skytrain variant.

Villavicencio Vanguardia

Villavicencio Vanguardia is the aiport of Villavicencio, the capital of the Meta department. The airport is home to no less than 30 of these marvellous flying machines and the base from where they make daily flights into the most remote parts of the Colombian Llanos and the Amazon jungle to deliver vital supplies to Colombia’s most isolated communities.

The DC-3 Experience

The realisation of a childhood dream, a fascination with aviation or simply a desire to have your own aeroplane and be flown around in it. The DC-3 Experience is our most unique, idiosyncratic, capricious, extravagant, and perfectly Colombian day out.

After arriving at Villavicencio Vanguardia you will go through a brief induction and history of your aeroplane before taking to the skies for a 60 minute flight across the seemingly endless Llanos Orientales. The flight both departs from and arrives back to Villavicencio Vanguardia.

Before, during and afterwards you will have plenty of photo opportunities with your propellor piston-powered piece of aviation history.

The Salt Mines of Nemocón

This is a day trip available from Bogotá

About

The Salt Mines of Nemocón are an immaculately preserved collection of tunnels and chambers in a former salt mine. The various chambers off the main routes show the history of salt mining all amidst spectacular atmospheric light effects and salt stalagtites and cascadas.

Nemocón itself is a cute colonial pueblo and a worthy destination in itself for a wander and refreshments after visiting the salt mines.

Tour outline

We arrange return transport from your accommodation to Nemocón and wait for you at the salt mines. The tour of the salt mines is guided by an expert.

We say…

  • Although the tour of a former salt mine doesn’t sound enticing, it is a great attraction only 74kms from Bogotá. We love it!
  • Religious? Then go on a Sunday when there is the weekly mass in the church inside the salt mines. Not religious? Then go between Monday and Saturday as there will be fewer people there.
  • Check our Flickr gallery on the right. The salt mines is a spectacular destination for photography and this tour is available with an expert photographic guide. Unlike the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá, this attraction is photography friendly.
  • For a great value day out, consider combining half a day at the salt mines with half a day at Guatavita

Bogotá City Tour

This is a city walking tour of Bogotá

About

With a population of 8 million inhabitants, Bogotá is by far the largest city in Colombia, actually the third largest city in South America. Like any self-respecting capital city, Bogotá is the country’s capital of art, academia, history, culture and government.

La Candelaria and Plaza Bolívar are Bogotá’s historic colonial centre and the hub of both national and citywide government.

Most visits to Colombia start and end by passing through Bogotá, so take the opportunity to get to know a little about our capital.

The Tour

If you are staying at a hotel in La Candelaria, our guide will pick you at your hotel before taking you on a brisk walk along Avenida Jiménez to the foot of Cerro Monserrate. The cerros are the green mountains that flank the Eastern edge of Bogotá, Monserrate stands next to El Cerro De Guadalupe and overlooks the city. The site is at the top of most visitors’ wishlists for Bogotá. We ascend Monserrate by cable car.

The weather is normally better during the mornings, hence we go to Monserrate first to enjoy the spectacular views across the city as far east as El Dorado Airport from where you should be able to see aircraft taking off. You will also have a chance to visit the Santuario de Monserrate church atop the mountain and the impressive gardens.

After Monserrate, we return to the colonial centre of La Candelaria and walk between the historic residences dating from the time of Spanish rule. We pass by La Plaza de Chorro de Quevedo the former lookout post of the Zipa Cacique and the site of the foundation of Bogotá in 1538.

We continue our walk towards the two blocks of the Banco de la Republic complex where we find The Botero Collection, arguably the most important art collection in South America. Not only does it house the works of one of Colombia’s most famous sons, Fernando Botero, but also his own collection of famous masterpieces including works by Dali, Renoir, Chagall, Max Ernst and Picasso. For the visitor more accustomed to the grand art galleries of Europe and North America, the Botero Collection will not only win you over with its charming colonial setting and pristine panelled rooms, but also with its laid back ambience and accessible artworks.

After the Botero Collection, we continue the tour onwards to Plaza Bolívar, the seat of Colombian power where we find El Capitol, the home of Colombian congress, The Palace of Justice, Edificio Liévano, the home of Bogotá’s alcaldía and Catedral la Primaria, Bogotá’s cathedral.

Situated behind El Capitol is Casa Nariño to which we pay a brief visit before ending the tour in La Avenida Séptima with an option to visit The Gold Museum.

Tejo in Bogotá

This is an afternoon outing in Bogotá. It is only available as an add-on to the Bogotá City Tour

About

Tejo is the designated national pastime of Colombia, a sport invented by the Chibcha Indians. Imagine an action-packed game of quoits or pétanque and you would be nearing the general concept of tejo.

The difference however is that metal discs are thrown at the targets, and those targets embedded in sand are small explosive charges of gunpowder wrapped in paper known as mechas

What is the perfect accompaniment for explosives? If you guessed “beer” then you’d be right. Your tenure on the tejo “field” is dependent on your ongoing consumption of one of Colombia’s national cervezas with a minimum purchase of one case per field.

Tour outline

Our private transport picks you up from your hotel early in the afternoon and takes you to one of Bogotá’s beery tejo venues. Your driver will organise your first case of beer and send your group on its way to your tejo field. At the end of the afternoon, your driver will take you back to your hotel.

The outing lasts for 4 to 6 hours depending on how much tejo you want.

Groups & private tours

Tejo is a social activity and for private outings you need a minimum of 4 people. If you are travelling solo then contact us to see if we have an open group tejo outing that coincides with your time in Bogotá. Make some tejo friends, drink beer and blow up the mechas.

We say…

  • Tejo is a uniquely Colombian day out, be sure to try it out whilst passing through Bogotá

Price includes

When you see a price on our website then it is a real trip or tour that can be booked, not an unrealistically low price to lure you into contacting us. Our company policy is that for each and every tour we identify exactly what is included in the stated price.

The price stated on this page includes the following

  • Prices based on a group of 4 people
  • A private driver for up to 6 hours giving you approximately 4 hours of Tejo
  • Your first case of beer

Chía

A visit to Chía is an option which can be combined with trips to Zipaquirá, Nemocón, Guatavita or Parque Jaime Duque from Bogotá

About

Chía is a well-heeled market town just outside Bogotá. Whilst it has a laid back café culture and an interesting streetscape, the town is best known for its educational establishments and the famous Andres Carne de Res restaurant.

Tour outline

Whilst Chía is a great little town, unless one has friends there, there isn’t really enough to attract the international visitor and keep them busy for a whole day. As such we offer a visit to Chía as an additional option for trips to Zipaquirá, Nemocón, Guatavita and Parque Jaime Duque.

We can also offer evening trips to Chía from Bogotá to experience the eclectic atmosphere and great steaks of the original Andres Carne de Res.

We say…

  • Consider adding Chía to your trip from Bogotá for some late afternoon people watching with a few beers in the main plaza

Price

A visit to Chía can often be added to another of our Bogotá day trips without any additional cost. For an evening trip to Chía to visit Andres Carne de Res you should budget 60€ for return private transport from Bogotá for up to 4 people.
