Hiking & Trekking Guide

Colombia is a veritable paradise for the avid hiker or trekker and offers an enticing mix of hot, cool, low and high altitudes, damp or arid landscapes.

Multi-day treks

The Colombian Way offers five multi-day treks each unique and offering something different and unique. All of our multi-day treks have expert guides that know the terrain inside out.

Cocora and Los Nevados

We offer three different 3 day treks starting in the Cocora Valley and then continuing up into the Los Nevados National Park. Full details can be found on the Cocora and Los Nevados 3-day treks page.

Ciudad Perdida

Probably Colombia’s best known trek, La Ciudad Perdida offers moderate trekking over the course of 5 days to the lost Kogi Indian city established over 1200 years ago. Nestled high in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the world’s highest coastal mountain range, the trek culminates in an ascent of 1200 steps through dense jungle. The trek is 44km.

The trek’s route passes through Kogi territory and is clearly defined. Ciudad Perdida is ideal for individuals as organised group tours leave regularly.

Caño Cristales

Caño Cristales offers easy trekking over the course of two days. It is a unique destination for 3 reasons. Firstly, it is one of the most remote and inaccessible destinations that we offer, we actually have to charter an aircraft to get you there.

Secondly, although Colombia itself is in its infancy in terms of mainstream tourism, the former security situation in Caño Cristales made it impractical and unsafe to visit until recently. Thanks to concerted efforts by the Colombian government, guerrilla ranks have been depleted across the whole of Colombia and Caño Cristales no longer has security issues. The high visibility military presence in the town of La Macarena is the closest you will get to an insight into Colombia’s recent troubled history.

Thirdly and most importantly, and the reason for visiting Caño Cristales is that it is quite simply the world’s most beautiful river and a sight that can only be witnessed in this remote part of the Colombian Llanos.

One-day treks, walks and hikes.

Colombia offers a wealth of one-day trekking destinations all of which are readily accessible from the principal cities. As such it is easy to build variety into your itinerary.

Páramo landscapes and Los Nevados

For subpáramo, páramo and superpáramo treks at altitude we offer Nevado del Ruíz and Nevado Santa Isabel. Both are available from the Coffee Zone

Andean scenic treks, walks and hikes.

Outside of the páramo landscapes the Andes offers numerous treks amongst lush green vegetation and crystal clear lagunas. Once again close to Bogotá, such treks are possible in Guatavita, Villa de Leyva and the popular hike from Barichara to Guane in the Santander department.

Tierradentro combines a superb circular trek with fascinating pre-columbian sites. The Cocora Valley offers an easy-going trek through misty Andean hillsides, the home to the impressive wax palm, the world’s tallest palm trees and the national tree of Colombia.

Ranging from easy hikes to moderate treks, Colombia’s natural parks offer limitless walking experience in stunning locations such as Rio Claro close to Medellín and The Cloud Forest of Chicaque close to Bogotá.

Coastal Forest

Apart from Parque Tayrona‘s popular hike to El Pueblito, less obvious coastal forest hiking can be found in Nuquí, Bahía Solano and El Golfo de Morrosquillo

Desert

Combine your Andean trekking with a hike through the arid orange and yellow landscapes of the Tatacoa Desert. The desert offers stunning deeply rivened landscapes and challenging heat conditions.
